Botox or Fillers: Which is Best for My Skin?

Botox or Fillers: Which is Best for My Skin?

If you’ve noticed fine lines and wrinkles on your face, consider Botox® or fillers to enhance or restore your youthful appearance. As you age, the collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin that keep your face smooth and your skin tight start to break down, leaving you with a weak support structure and skin that shows signs of aging.

Nandeesh Veerappa, MD, and Gifty Aidoo, FNP-C, create customized beauty treatment plans at Aesthetic Lab in Modesto and Turlock, California. For facial lines and creases that appear and deepen over time, Botox is an effective treatment. To replace lost volume in your hands or face, we use Juvéderm®, which softens features like wrinkles and scars.

When deciding between Botox or fillers, it’s helpful to understand how they work and affect your skin.

What is Botox, and how does it work?

Botox is the first US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved injectable version of botulinum toxin and has been on the market since 2002. It works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals to the muscles within your face, reducing their ability to tense, even unintentionally, and alleviating the signs of aging.

Botox doesn’t work on wrinkles from sun damage, but it can easily reduce the appearance of crow’s feet, frown lines, neck wrinkles, and vertical lip lines. It’s a common procedure with very few side effects, lasting from four months to a year.

Because we inject Botox directly into the muscle, it doesn’t affect the color or texture of your skin. The needles are tiny, allowing the injection site to remain invisible. All muscular effects are also temporary, so you needn’t worry about irreversible damage. In one study, scientists discovered that Botox might even stop the formation of new wrinkles over time.

What are fillers, and how do they work?

When the first signs of aging appear, we are fortunate to have access to a wide range of nonsurgical treatments. You’ll discover how much you can gain by exploring filler options with our injection experts.

Unlike Botox, fillers are placed directly underneath the dermal layer of your skin. Juvéderm is a long-lasting hyaluronic acid filler that works by mimicking subdermal fat, which decreases as you age.

Once these subdermal layers start to break down, Juvéderm helps recreate the plump yet soft youthful appearance, reducing wrinkles and scars for up to 18 months. Juvéderm can also add natural-looking dimensions to your cheeks, jaw, brows, lips, and more through sculpting.
